Javier Mascherano has agreed to become the new head coach of Inter Miami, according to reports from TyC Sports. The former Barcelona and Liverpool midfielder will lead a star-studded squad that includes his old teammates Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets. His mission? To guide the Florida-based club to its first-ever MLS title after a surprising failure to secure it this season.
Nicknamed El Jefecito (The Little Boss), Mascherano brings managerial experience from his time coaching Argentina’s U20 and U23 Olympic teams. He will succeed Gerardo Martino, who decided to step down following Inter Miami’s shocking elimination in the MLS playoff round of 16 against Atlanta. The club’s ownership has chosen Mascherano to spearhead a long-term project and will sign him to a three-year contract. The official announcement is expected soon, once Martino’s departure is formally confirmed.
Inter Miami reportedly considered other candidates, including Xavi Hernández, but the former Barcelona manager opted to stay in Europe, citing concerns over the competitive challenge of a move to MLS.
