Matthäus on Inter: “They Lack the Pace of German Clubs – Bayern Still Favourites”

Three days on from FC Inter Milan’s impressive win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, legendary former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthäus, who played for both clubs, has shared his thoughts ahead of Wednesday’s return leg at San Siro — a match that will decide a spot in the Champions League semi-finals.
For Matthäus, the tie is far from over, and he believes Vincent Kompany’s side can still pull off a comeback in Milan:
“Nothing is lost yet,” he told Sport1. “A miracle in Milan has happened before. Bayern - like German football as a whole - has great memories at San Siro and knows how to turn things around. In the 1988-89 UEFA Cup it could have ended 10-3, but Raimond Aumann delivered a world-class performance in goal, playing the game of his life.”
“Two Hearts in My Chest”
Matthäus admitted he’s torn emotionally when it comes to this clash, feeling strong connections to both clubs:
“I have two hearts beating in my chest - one for Inter and one for Bayern. It’s not nice having to suffer or cry for just one team. I have an incredible bond with Inter and its fans.”
He also pointed to what he sees as a tactical weakness in Simone Inzaghi’s Inter:
“Bayern don’t enjoy being pressed, but Inter lack the kind of pace that 80% of Bundesliga teams have. That, for me, is a key factor. I don’t see Inzaghi’s side as favourites - I know what Bayern Munich are capable of.”
With emotions running high and the tie delicately poised, Wednesday’s match at San Siro promises to be a thrilling conclusion to a high-stakes European showdown.
