PREMIER - Arsenal ready to challenge Inter and Barcelona for Ajax's goalie
Arsenal-linked stopper Andre Onana could depart from Ajax on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, director of football Marc Overmars has revealed.
The Cameroon international goalkeeper was tipped to finalise a move to the North London giants, in the most recent transfer window before Mikel Arteta’s team opted to move for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale instead.
However, with current stopper Bernd Leno supposedly set to depart from the club on a free transfer next year, the Gunners could once again be in the market for a new name in between the sticks in 2022.
When asked about the possibility of extending Onana’s contract, Overmars has now handed his former team a major boost should they renew their interest in the 25-year-old, telling Ajax TV: “You never know in football, but the way I see it now, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
“It is possible that he will leave in the winter, but that must yield a decent amount. It must go both ways. If the amount is not sufficient, then [he will leave] in July for nothing.”
Onana was also tipped to finalise a move to Ligue 1 giants, Lyon in the summer before a transfer fell through, and the ex-Barcelona wonderkid is still serving a doping ban for another two months
