Lionel Messi, speaking candidly in an interview with the Simplemente Fútbol YouTube channel, has opened up about one of the most emotional chapters of his career - his desire to return to Barcelona after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

After the World Cup, I couldn’t see myself playing for any European club other than Barcelona. My goal was to return. To go home, where it all began. But sadly, it wasn’t possible.”

A New Chapter in Miami
Unable to complete a return to the Camp Nou, La Pulga made the bold decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain and head across the Atlantic, joining Inter Miami and club co-owner David Beckham. “Moving here was a purely family decision. We came to the United States, to Miami, to live this new experience,” Messi explained.

Competitive Fire Still Burning
When asked about his future, Messi made it clear that the desire to compete remains as strong as ever:
“I have no doubt I’ll continue to compete. That instinct will never leave me - it’s part of who I am. I grew up this way. I love to win, I love to compete.”

With a contract at Inter Miami running through to the end of 2025, Messi also admitted that his next major decision will revolve around the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada: “This year will be important for deciding about the World Cup. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about it.”

Even if a return to Barcelona didn’t materialise, Messi’s passion for the game and his love for his “home” club remain unwavering - as does his pursuit of greatness on the world stage.
